Biography

Back to artist page

Justus de Rode (1997, Groningen) works with photography, alternative printing processes and mixed media and explores subjects from natural history, geology and ecology. Usually set in nature, a recurring theme is the interplay of reason and feeling in perception.

FLAT // LAND  is happy to announce its cooperation with Dutch artist Justus De Rode (b.1997, Groningen) for this fall. Director Fiona van Schendel “The work of Justus de Rode is timeless and sensitive. What you sense is the artist’s engagement with his subject, such as the fragile character of the natural. And behind this is a more profound concept in his work; his emphasis is not on what distinguishes us from others or other beings, but what connects us. There is no us and them. It makes it very interesting’.

De Rode will be represented by Open Doors Gallery, a London based gallery specialized in emerging contemporary arts.

In 2023 he published his second publication Mycelium in which he reconnects with his father who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, capturing his experience of the world through photography, while starting a visual dialogue consisting of his father painting on De Rode’s photographic prints. Besides several exhibitions, Mycelium was featured in dutch newspapers Het Parool, Dagblad van het Noorden and international magazines like Musée Magazine. In 2024 De Rode started his series Views of Nature, exploring Alexander von Humboldt’s outlook on nature, a plea for sensibility ever so relevant in present day. The work was featured on GalleryViewer, and is part of multiple exhibitions, at IN- DEPENDANCE, Antwerp (BE) among others. In the fall of 2025 a selection of his unique cyanotypes will be for the first time on view with FLAT // LAND.
