Mesmerizing, Scarlett Hooft Graafland in Panorama Mesdag

February 7, 2025

From 29 March 2025, the captivating photographic works of artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland (1973) will be exhibited at Panorama Mesdag, the home of the 360 degrees painting of Scheveningen (1880) of Hendrik Willem Mesdag.

The retrospective exhibition Mesmerizing shows a wide selection of artworks, including Scarlett Hooft Graafland’s latest work.

As the seaside scene, a vista of the sea, the dunes and the old Fisherman’s village Scheveningen is of immense importance for Mesdag, so are the salt flats, ice caps and deserts for Scarlett Hooft Graafland (1973). From Iceland to Madagascar and from Bolivia to Turkey she stages colourful and often mysterious performances and installations.

Scarlett Hooft Graafland stays in those places for long periods of time and always works closely with the local population. She chooses her subjects while she’s there, inspired by nature and the culture of the location. Her personal insights of life return in her work. She addresses topical issues like climate change, inequality and the position of women with humour and surprise.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication ” Scarlett Hooft Graafland. Mesmerizing” containing photographs of Scarlett Hooft Graafland’s work, complemented by in-depth background stories about the photographs featured in the exhibition. The publication was written by Adrienne Quarles van Ufford, Head of Museum Affairs of Panorama Mesdag.
