New York: Best in Show – Pets in contemporary photography with Leila Jeffreys and Martin Usborne
January 9, 2024
Contemporary photography museum Fotografiska presents 25 global artists who show a unique perspective or narrative of the presence of animals in contemporary art. The exhibit also aims to be a celebration of pets and humans’ undying love for them, yet there is always a downside when it comes to humans as can be witnessed by the haunting photographs of (rescued) greyhounds in Spain in the project ‘where hunting dogs rest’ by British photographer Martin Usborne. Used, gambled with, mistreated and hung till death, in rural Spain relationships with dogs resembles nothing other than No-civilisation.
Among other works on view are works by William Wegman, famed for his portraits of his Weimaraners; Martin Parr’s satirical portrayals of pets across social classes and the Australian wonderful bird photographer Leila Jeffreys (see image). Of Jeffreys an installation is included to mimic the experience of sitting in a park and enjoying nature.
Over 130 works, including documentary photographs, arranged portraits, candid snaps, and video pieces are included.
The show can be visited until January 27th, 2024.
