FLAT//LAND is very proud that Leila Jeffreys’ photograph of ‘Christo, Orange Headed Gouldian Finch’ has been selected for the cover of the book MODÈLE ANIMALE that accompagnies the exhibiton. The book gathers images created between 1839 and the present day to examine how photography has shaped human representation and understanding of animals.

From Eadweard Muybridge’s galloping horses to Walter Chandoha’s expressive cats, from former hunter George Shiras’s night deer to Elliott Erwitt’s bulldogs, from Jean Painlevé’s seahorses to Martin Parr’s or Inge Morath’s llamas.

Blending major works and anonymous images, the book composes a journey articulated around seven perspectives – anatomical, performative, affective, fascinated, ethical, plastic and finally viral – and invites us to rethink, through 200 years of photography, the complex and sensitive relationships we maintain with living things.
