To celebrate the creation of the rich publication titled BIRDLAND, BIRDS IN THE ARTS, 99 Publishers and Paul Knolle curated a large show that includes works dating from Melchior d'Hondecoeter of the 17th century (Zwaan in gevechtshouding) to works by contemporary artists Leila Jeffreys, Studio Drift and Minne Kersten.
The celebrated publication 'Vogels in de kunst', with 192 pages and 225 images, was initiated by Mart Warmerdam and Riëlle Boerland. The interest for the subject can be found in the perilous state and low survival rate of many bird species due to habitat loss as a result of human action. The book therefor also includes ornithological facts and info on subjects such as symbolism, biodiversity, extinction, taxidermy, trade, looted art, hunting and how feathers are part of the fashion industry.
Works by Leila Jeffreys on view in exhibition BIRDLAND.
